Eclipses in Astrology

Updated: Aug 25, 2023

Eclipses in Astrology

Eclipses in Astrology happen around every 6 months. You often hear astrologers announce that it is eclipse season because they come in pairs. Eclipse Season is highly anticipated and ever so elusive when trying to understand what the heck that means in astrology.

The Eclipse Path and Visibility

Eclipses can be seen, which makes them extra interesting. It’s scientifically there. They can be witnessed in person, depending on your location, or online by anyone who wants to see the phenomenon.

Each unique eclipse has its own path in the sky and not all eclipses are visible to everyone. It depends on where you are at the time of each particular eclipse. So if you want to know if an upcoming eclipse will be visible to you, you can find out at the Time and Date website.

This visible phenomenon makes headlines around the world. People in the path of an eclipse post videos and photos all over social media of the wondrous sight. Oftentimes it won’t be visible to you, but because of technology, at least you can get a look at it online.

What happens in a solar eclipse is that the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting the shadow of the Moon on the Sun. This can only happen at a New Moon.

When the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, it is a lunar eclipse. This casts the shadow of the earth on the Moon, and this can only happen at the Full Moon.

How do Eclipses Affect My Chart

How will it affect me is always the question, right? Well, it depends if the eclipse is touching a planet or a sensitive point in your chart. For sure the eclipse will take place somewhere in your astrology chart. How strongly you feel it will vary.

Astrologers always want to point out eclipse energy because it’s an important astrological event. It’s important to note that many of us will not experience the energy directly. We have to look at it in the context of our birth or natal chart. We look at how prominent it is in your chart based on if it is touching any planet or sensitive point within a few degrees.

The sign that the Moon is in will give us information on the energetic qualities of that particular eclipse. Where the eclipse falls in your chart will tell us the topics likely to be impacted by the eclipse. That is the different houses in the natal birth chart. So if the eclipse were to be in the area of your chart that has to do with relationships, or children, or career, then astrology can narrow it down for you.

Hand with Eclipse Inside

If you don’t have a copy of your chart, there are free resources online that provide this information. Get a copy of your chart, and then you can check out when the next eclipses are coming up to see where they fall in your chart.

You can check the website above for dates, and my Astroblog for more information on specific eclipses through my New and Full Moon blogs. I will include information on an eclipse in the full or new moon post preceding the eclipse. Remember that eclipses only happen on new or full moons.

There are two sites I like for getting a free chart. There is Astro-Seek and Astro.com.

Whether it is a solar or lunar eclipse, the light of one of the luminaries, Sun or Moon, is dimmed, or even completely blotted out. The luminaries are about life, and in astrology, they represent life-giving qualities.

The Sun is our identity and vitality. The Moon represents our emotions, security needs, and our physical body. When one of your lights is dimmed, you may feel out of sorts, lacking vitality, or unsettled.

Generally speaking, if an eclipse isn’t within a few degrees of something in your chart, it could pass you by completely unnoticed. Each chart will have its unique mix of relationships within their natal chart, and the configuration of the sky at the time of eclipse, which will individualize the astrology of the eclipse for you.

In your personal chart, eclipses can be a potent trigger that activates something that is already present in your chart. It needs to be close to a planet or point in order to activate it, within a few degrees.

It can represent an area of your chart where you will experience a change, chaos, or feel out of your groove in some way. Sometimes people recognize big changes only after some time has passed, and upon reflection, realize they passed through a time of great change.

Ancient Astrologers Saw Eclipses as Omens

Historically, from an astrological perspective, eclipses have always had great meaning. They were commonly interpreted by ancient astrologers as it relates to events of their kingdom and the royals or people of high position and power.

Eclipses were treated like omens bringing messages, oftentimes negative, or warnings of devastation. Not all eclipses are equal, and not all eclipses would bring devastation. Each eclipse will have a unique sky configuration with planets in different relationships with each other.

Eclipses and Politics

Politically, we could look at the eclipse chart and compare it to the chart of a country, an international organization, or an event, like the signing of a treaty or the start of a war. Another popular use of eclipses is to look at weather, climate, disease, and natural disaster patterns.

Ancient eclipse omens and politics, ancient and modern, are outside of the scope of this article. But if you are interested in learning more, here are a few links that focus on these subjects:

Eclipses are based on the Moon

Eclipses happen at the New and Full Moon. The months when there are eclipses increase the potency of that New or Full Moon. These lunations become more sensitive and it’s important to take a look at the overall energy of the New and Full Eclipse Moons to get a feel of the energy.

Remember that in order for you to feel the eclipse strongly, you will want to see if it is happening within a few degrees of a planet or sensitive point in your chart.

Eclipses come in pairs, there are always two. Occasionally there are three. The Solar and Lunar Eclipses are two weeks apart, and we have eclipse seasons around every 6 months. There are always 4 a year, but there can be more depending on the year.

If you want to learn more about how an eclipse plays a part in your astrology chart, you would need to do one of two things. Learn astrology and interpret your own chart. Or consult with an astrologer who can let you know if it is making a relationship with your chart.

Being sensitive or aware of this strong energy during the time period it is active can be helpful in taking purposeful and mindful action in your self-development. Generally speaking, if you know an eclipse is coming, try to ease up your schedule, rest and relax.

New Moon Journaling

One of the things I always recommend is journaling on the New Moon. Do it on the Full Moon too when it fits your schedule, especially if it’s eclipse season.

If you can manage it in your schedule, take it easy the days before, during, and after an eclipse. The life-giving light of the Sun or Moon will be dimmed during the eclipse. So move in rhythm with the universe and take it easy.

When you journal, be mindful of your mood, emotions, and feelings in your body. Try to relax, engage in self-care, and get lots of rest. Be mindful of what happens both internally and externally and write it down.

Reflecting back through your journal can really open your eyes. Sometimes events that happen make a lot more sense later on. You may be experiencing changes that are really significant but do not become clear until you have a chance to engage in actions, process and integrate those changes in your life, and then reflect back on the changes in the context of the bigger picture of your life.

Specific Eclipses, Full Moons, and New Moons

Every month I write about the energy of that specific New and Full Moon. When that particular month includes an eclipse, I write about it as part of the energy of that Full or New Moon.

If you want to learn more about a specific eclipse, read the Full or New Moon blog for that date. If you want to find out when the next eclipse is, check it out here: Time and Date website.
