Capricorn New Moon Overview
New moons are generally about new beginnings when a new seed is planted and when the night sky is darkest. This new moon in particular has a forward looking energy as it takes place right after the new year in a sign that correlates to the long-term and all planets are moving in direct motion.
In fact, we won't have any planets retrograde the remainder of January and all of February and March. The next retrograde will be Mercury April 1st, so plan on pushing forward your new projects and ideas now under this harmonious, focused and strategic new moon.Â
It’s a good time to kick off your goals and vision for 2024 or write them if you haven't already. In mid-March, when the pre-shadow Mercury retrograde period happens, it will be time to do some reflecting on what you do between now and then.
You may find some inspiration in this Capricorn new moon cycle that is supported with an extra boost of energy from Mars and practical solutions inspired by Jupiter. Both Mars and Jupiter are in earth signs, the same element as the Capricorn new moon. Plus they make a tight harmonious 3 planet sextile with Saturn.
This harmonious energy combined with a Capricorn new moon phase gives us a wonderful vibe for the beginning of a new year. Take advantage of this fresh energy and take action on the most important things going on in your life throughout the month of January.
Capricorn New Moon
Capricorn is an earth element known for determination, tenacity, and shrewdness. Capricorn energy is steady, serious and strategic, never losing sight of the end goal and can be unwavering when motivated.
The shadow side of Capricorn is controlling, rigid, cold, and ruthless.
Capricorn is one of the cardinal signs, which have the quality of taking action, pivoting to navigate the terrain, and tend to be natural leaders. The other cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, and Libra.
During this Capricorn new moon, your chart is activated if you have natal chart placements in any of these four signs.Â
Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn and represents setting boundaries, having structure, and where you work hard in life.Â
It’s about where you build things with effort. Saturn in your chart shows you where you can gain rewards in life through effort or experience the hard knocks for laziness and avoidance of hard work and effort.
The astrology house occupied by Capricorn will provide you with more details on how this energy is likely to manifest in your life. By looking at those life areas, you can be more strategic for how you want to use this energy and personalize it to your chart.
This Capricorn new moon represents an auspicious time for setting realistic and challenging goals for the long-term.

Planets in Capricorn: New Moon, Sun, Mars, Mercury
A few days after the Capricorn new moon, Mercury will move into Capricorn joining Mars. That means we will have an abundance of Capricorn energy over the next few weeks.
Even though the Moon will move out of Capricorn on Friday, the Sun, Mars, and Mercury will be there the rest of the month.Â
The Capricorn part of your chart is energized by these three bodies and you would be wise to take advantage of this energy.
Whatever you set your mind to will have the solar energy of vitality, the physical energy of Mars to add determined and focused effort, and the mental determination and strategy to pull it off when Mercury arrives in Capricorn on January 14, three days after the Capricorn new Moon.Â
Focus your energy towards projects and important goals because you could be surprised by how much extra energy you have to put into them. Capricorn is a serious sign and wants to produce a successful outcome.
Working With Capricorn Energy
If you have a natal placement in your chart between 15 - 29 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn, you will feel the vibe of the new moon the most strongly. The Capricorn new moon is at 20 degrees and Pluto is at 29 degrees of Capricorn.
During this Capricorn new moon - put in the effort. Develop a strategy, and be disciplined and structured in your approach. What you do during this new moon and the rest of January could pay off for you down the road.Â
Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, is Kronos, the god of time. Things developed under a Capricorn new moon are likely to have long-term ramifications and rewards.
That's why I am highly recommending you work on your goals during the Capricorn new moon, this is energy to create something that lasts over time. Remember that Saturn or Capricorn energy is about earning the fruits of your labor through hard work.
Your best way to use this energy is to put effort into something important to you. Sitting idle may not cause any problems, but it can represent a time period of lost opportunity by doing nothing.
Mars Sextile Jupiter Sextile Saturn
This message of taking strategic action toward your long-term goals is further highlighted by a tight sextile between Jupiter in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, and Saturn in Pisces.
There is focused physical energy that will boost your efforts. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn in this tight harmonious sextile is like having energy, optimism, and determination all working together in perfect harmony.
The harmonious energy between these planets makes a nice backdrop whether your chart is directly activated or not. Starting something around this time will catch this harmonious, determined, and strategic energy as part of its energetic makeup.
You could say the energy gets baked into the projects you are starting now. And if these are long-term projects like I am recommending, these projects will carry the essence of this period of time in them.
Capricorn New Moon at The Bends: Square the Lunar Nodes
The New Moon and Sun will exactly square the transiting lunar nodes, north node in Aries and south node in Libra, also called being at the bends.Â
This means that there can be results from your efforts that feel or seem fated. Like they were meant to be. As time unfolds, it will become more clear how what you do now manifests in what is to come.
This is especially true if your natal chart lunar node placements are in the cardinal signs Libra and Aries, or Cancer and Capricorn. There is a feeling of karmic timing happening and an opening to step out into unknown territory or a temptation to fall back into what is comfortable.
Your best bet is to assertively and strategically step into the unknown and challenge yourself to learn and grow. Use past experience to inform the future, but don't let it hold you back. Past experiences are learning lessons.
Lean into your strengths and take action toward what you really want to manifest this year.

Pluto Moves into Aquarius, Again
Pluto will be moving back into Aquarius on Saturday, January 20th. This is a significant sign change since Pluto is a slow-moving planet. It takes 248 years for Pluto to move through the entire zodiac.
As a comparison, the Moon moves through the entire zodiac each month, the Sun moves through it in one year and Mars moves through it in two years. Jupiter takes twelve years and Saturn takes 29 years.
We had a preview of Pluto in Aquarius back in March of 2023 when it dipped into Aquarius the first time. Because of retrograde motion, it went back into Capricorn in June of 2023 and stayed there until now. You can look back to that time period to notice what may have come up for you.
Pluto will retrograde into Capricorn briefly one more time later this year before it goes into Aquarius and stays there for two decades, until 2043.
The cardinal signs Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn will feel the pressure ease when Pluto leaves. Since 2008, these four signs have been activated by Pluto.
If you have natal placements in the early degrees of these four signs, the intense pressure from Pluto activating your chart passed years ago. Those of you with placements in Capricorn, Aries, Cancer or Libra in later degrees have been feeling the intensity over the last few years.
Now it will move out of the Capricorn part of your chart and the Plutonian themes move to the fixed signs. Pluto will be in Aquarius and making challenging, or growth oriented, relationships with the Leo, Scorpio and Taurus placements in your natal chart.
On a world scale, we are moving into a new period with Pluto in Aquarius that will last until 2043. Pluto’s theme is power: Power over, under or empowerment. Pluto in Capricorn was about power over, traditionally hierarchical from the top down.Â
Pluto moves into Aquarius, the sign of the people. We will have a few decades to see changes in power dynamics on the world stage where the power gets diffused from those 'at the top' into the hands of the masses.
Pluto represents a time period where big change happens. But big change doesn’t happen all the time, so it’s important to look at your individual chart to gain a better understanding of when something is activated in your chart.
Astrologers tend to focus in on aspects from slow-moving planets like Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune when they are within 1-2 degrees of a natal placement. These relationships of a moving planet to your natal chart are called transits.
For a better understanding of how the transits of these slow moving planets may impact you, especially with Pluto changing signs, book an astrological consultation with me using this link:Â

Your Personal Chart
If you don’t have your natal chart placements memorized, it’s best to have your chart in front of you to see which houses are occupied by the signs Capricorn (new Moon, Sun, Mars and Mercury three days after the new Moon) and Aquarius (Pluto changing signs).Â
The themes and topics associated with those houses will give you more personal information about what parts of life you will benefit the most from focusing on during the new moon.
If you are just getting started with astrology, learn more about the astrology houses here.
If you don’t have a copy of your chart, you can get a free one online at either Astro.com or Astro-Seek.com.
Mercury Post-Retrograde Shadow
The Mercury retrograde post-shadow ends on January 20 after going direct the first day of the year, January 1 - New Year's Day.Â
If you’re working with the retrograde cycle, now is the time to implement what you discovered in your reflection time during the retrograde in December. The new moon is a perfect time for you to wrap up your retrograde projects and get ready to push forward new ideas and new phases of projects or relationships as we move into the Capricorn new moon phase.
With no planets retrograde from now until April 1, Mercury’s next retrograde cycle, all planets are forward-focused. Use this knowledge as part of your strategy to push forward assertively in January.Â
Determination is in the air and the planets are all moving direct. So roll up your sleeves and get to work. This will hold more meaning for you personally if you know what astrological house is activated by these Capricorn placements.
Things to do under the Capricorn new moon include:
Do a new moon ritual that includes earth, the element of Capricorn. If the weather permits in your location, do your ritual outside. Use herbs, plants, or branches you find on the ground.
Put structure somewhere in your life where it’s needed. For example, start using a calendar app and plan your weekly schedule out. Or re-arrange your office so you can be more productive.
Review your commitments and watch for any areas that you are over-committed or where you should increase some self-discipline.
Put together a 2024 strategy to accomplish your major goals and vision. Double check your 2024 goals for practicality, ask yourself ‘how realistic are my goals?’
Take a look at your long-term goals. Do you have them? Are they realistic?
Hold your boundaries with someone or something in your life.
