About the Capricorn New Moon

The quality of the Capricorn new moon is structure, discipline, strategy, and determination. It can be quite somber in comparison to some of the other new moons we experience. Capricorn is an earth element and a very grounded sign. No fluffiness or fanciful daydreaming here.

Practicality and caution are more accessible under Capricorn new moon energy making it a great time to write SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and with a time frame). You are more likely to be realistic than a daydreamer under the Capricorn new moon.

The energy of this time can feel more heavy than usual. The excitement of the holiday and time off work is in the rearview mirror and we are still facing an international crisis of a pandemic. The instability of the world is on every news channel and many businesses are still suffering the effects of the shifts in how we do business nowadays.

This can leave many people feeling down or depressed. If you do have a history of depression, be sure to reach out to your support group if you need help. Some may feel like isolating, and that can be okay if you are doing self-care and self-nurturing. This is not a time to suffer in silence.

If you, or someone you love, suffers from depression, do be sure to take extra care of yourself during this time. Not everyone will feel this down or heavy energy. Some will love the seriousness of getting down to business and are excited to dive back into work. If that sounds like you, this is a great time to get ahead with some strategic planning.

As you know, this is not just a new moon, but a new year. New moons are about new starts, fresh beginnings, new phases of something, or taking something to a new level. It’s a time of seeding and incubation that grows into the fullness of the full moon.

An approach to this particular Capricorn new moon and new year is to decide with your new moon intentions to accept the new normal we are living under and design new structures around how we will live with the pandemic.

As much as most of us would like to go back to how it was before, it is unlikely that will happen anytime soon, if ever. Under this Capricorn new moon is a great time to accept and embrace this new normal by creating new life structures that fulfill us like before, but in a different way.

If you are rigidly holding on to ‘how it was before’ then this new moon can give you new inspiration to adjust and let go so that you can create a new and refreshing approach to living in a practical and realistic way.

The Capricorn new moon energy reflects to us from the sky that there is a way to overcome the struggle, grief, and loss of how it was by creating new ways of doing things in the future. Capricorn symbolizes the determination and tenacity we have as humans to build new systems and structures in our lives that are long-lasting.

We each can do this on an individual level and push forward in our lives, break out of the restraints of lockdown, difficult travel, and economic problems by creating new ways of doing things based on reflecting on the past. With the retrograde energy present during the Capricorn new moon, it indicates a time of reworking things from the past so we can move forward.

Capricorn is strategic and excellent at finding ways to build even in the hardest of times. This is a time to channel any feelings of limitations, restrictions, and hardship into creative problem solving and strategic solution finding.

As you go through this process of strategically thinking about what you want your 2022 to look like, notice when negative feelings come up and obstacles that are in the way of moving forward. Write them down on a piece of paper separate from your Capricorn new moon intentions or annual goals.

You can do a releasing ritual at the upcoming full moon mid-January where you release those negative feelings and obstacles. This is something you can do every month, and is important in any new year goal setting you do. The releasing ritual symbolizes you removing blocks that are in the way of manifesting your goals.

At the time of this Capricorn new moon, we are already well into the Venus retrograde and the Mercury retrograde energy is building. We are already in what is called the Mercury retrograde shadow period. This cosmic mix indicates that we are in a time of re-evaluating, adjusting, refreshing relationships, and adjusting our thinking so that we can move forward.

Setting Goals under the Capricorn New Moon Phase

The first new moon of 2022 is a Capricorn new moon. The quality of the energy syncs well to the kick off of a new year. While we tend to think of setting new year resolutions, I suggest setting new year goals instead. And not just one month or year, but also long-term goals.

The Capricorn new moon falls on the 2nd of January. Don’t worry about rushing to get your goals written on that date. Take the first two weeks of the month to work on them, like a project.

The new moon happens on Sunday, and it’s important to start writing your goals during the new moon phase. You can see the times above. Start writing your intentions and goals after the new moon phase begins in your time zone, or any day this upcoming week. I really like the days Thursday and Friday, the 6th and 7th as days to work on your goals, as the Moon travels through creative Pisces.

The reason I am suggesting you take your time is because Capricorn has the quality of longevity. The goals you write now should be strategic with a long-term vision for the year and beyond. You may want to do this process over a few days so you can contemplate and envision what you want to achieve in the future.

Take your time to think about where you want to go over the next year, and the next five, ten, or even twenty years. Then write your 2022 goals for the steps you need to lay the foundation for those long-term goals. When you extend this process over a few days or weeks, you allow your mind the opportunity to deeply elaborate on your true desires.

It’s helpful to have simple big long-term goals (think 3, 5, 10, and 20 year goals), and just a few, like 3-5 of them. Then for your annual goals, think of them more like action items, or short-term goals. They are the stepping stones along your journey in life that you are walking on now that lead you in the direction of the larger long-term vision. I talk more about this concept in the Capricorn new moon video you can watch on Facebook.

As you are visioning your long-term goals, think big. Your big goals should be achievable and realistic. If they are not, you are wasting precious time and Capricorn energy is not about that. Saturn is serious about achievement and success and knows how to plan ahead strategically. At the same time you want to stretch and challenge yourself to go for what will bring you true authentic joy.

If you are reading this and thinking ‘oh I know what I want to achieve, I don’t need to write them down,’ of course that is a choice you will make. I can tell you that there is statistical evidence that those who write their goals have a better chance of achieving them. When you write down your goals, you strategize how you will get there and start formulating your action plan. Then you have your blueprint to work off of the rest of the year, and each following year.

When you make this an annual event, you have a great amount of information to track your progress, celebrate your wins, and notice when you need to adjust your course. It helps you recognize just how far you have come, when you need to let go of goals that have outworn their desire, and when to add new ones in.

I specialize in this type of planning in my astrology practice. If you would like to work with me on developing your strategy for achieving long-term goals and success, contact me or schedule a consultation.

Capricorn New Moon and Venus Retrograde

If you know any Capricorns, or you are a Capricorn, you know there is a serious side ever present that is responsible, determined, and gets things done. We have a Capricorn new moon beaming down opportunities for strategy, starting new things, and planning ahead.

At the same time the Capricorn new moon is asking us to strategically look forward, Venus retrograde in Capricorn is asking us to strategically look backwards and make needed adjustments.

This combination works very well together, unless you fight the process. If you fight the process, you are likely to find struggles and problems in relationships or events happen outside of your control where you have to make adjustments in your relating style.

You may experience an event or person who brings change to you if you are unable or unwilling to make a needed change on your own. Often times the relationship is with a person or yourself, and it can also show up as a relationship to something, like money or spirituality. It likely manifests in asking you to work on an important relationship or relating style in your life.

Capricorn is about putting in the hard work knowing that hard work has a payoff. Whether it’s emotional, mental, or physical, when you engage in the work and give it your best, eventually a reward will come your way. There is often a struggle involved, which makes the fruit of your labor even more sweet. This is the sign Venus is retrograde in.

The planet Venus is about relationships and relating styles. How this energy manifests in your life is dependent on where it is active in your chart. For some it will not trigger anything in your chart, but it is likely someone around you will experience something.

If you aren’t feeling the Venus retrograde energy directly, like a need to rework your relating style to some area in your life, be sensitive to your friends and family who may be feeling some stress in their relationship or relating style. To understand Venus retrograde better, I wrote an in depth article about it that you can read here.

Whether you are experiencing an adjustment in a relationship with a person, within yourself, or another part of life like your career or spirituality, it’s likely that this will have an influence on what you want to accomplish this year, and possibly your long-term goals. It can help you find clarity for moving forward in the future.

It’s like that saying ‘if I only knew then what I know now.’ You are encouraged to learn from your past so that you can move forward with more insight and enlightenment.

Capricorn is about commitment, longevity, and things that last and Capricorn energy is highly activated this first week of the year. It can show up as making a commitment to something or someone. Marriage engagements at this time can signify a long future together. This long-term commitment can be for starting a new business, a new partnership, or launching a new product.

The Venus retrograde may bring up some wrinkles that need to be ironed out first, but then smooth the way for moving forward, especially after January 9, when the energy shifts from finding the wrinkles, to actually smoothing them out.

The planet Pluto is traveling closely with Venus at the time of the new moon. There is an increased amount of intensity around any relationship wrinkles needing ironing at this time. Keep this in mind so that you give extra space to relationship issues that do need ironing out. If talks get fiery and intense, take some time outs for cooling down so compromises can be found.

There can be a purification quality to whatever comes up for you related to Venus retrograde. And you can be sure that if any relationship issues do come up, you will go deeper than surface level adjustments. Getting to the root of unresolved issues from the past is how the purification will manifest.

Remember that not everyone will feel this energy in the same way. You will likely feel it the most if you have planets or points in the signs Capricorn, Cancer, Libra, or Aries around the degrees 23-27. Of course you will need your chart for this.

  1. Do your new moon intentions during the week after the Capricorn new moon phase starts.

  2. Thursday or Friday are nice days to write goals and intentions, when the Moon enters Pisces, to get a creative boost for your goal setting.

  3. Write realistic and practical 2022 goals using the SMART system.

  4. Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and with a time table.

  5. Do this end of year new moon ritual:

  6. Write about what you are grateful for from 2021.

  7. Write a list of what you achieved or accomplished in 2021.

  8. List what you are happy to leave behind in 2021.

  10. If you are in the process of restructuring a relationship, set intentions for what you want that relationship to look like in the future.

  14. Strategically put away holiday decorations and organize them in a way that will be helpful next year when you get them back out, like you are planting the seed for next year.

Capricorn New Moon Phase Activities

Here are things you can do, start, or put into action during the two weeks of the new moon phase.

  1. Start a new program that you want to maintain in the long term.

  2. Start an exercise program, make a schedule change, add massage or another type of self-care program as a monthly or weekly calendared routine.

  3. Practice holding balanced boundaries with others. Whether you are too loose or too rigid, evaluate, update, and implement balance under this new moon with the intention of maintaining this over a longer period of time.

  4. Be kind to yourself and practice self-care if you feel down.

  5. You may want to spend more time alone to contemplate the changes we have experienced as humans in this world. It’s okay to do this.

  6. If you have any mental health difficulties seek help and do not isolate yourself in these circumstances.

  7. Review your responsibilities for realistic expectations and adjust as necessary.

  8. Focus on what is important, identify what your priorities are, and those things that you can put to the side.

  9. Take care of your bones, joints, and teeth. If you have been having any problems or have neglected these areas of the body make an appointment with a professional.

Capricorn Journaling Prompts

  1. Have you written 2022 goals yet? What about long-term goals?

  2. If yes, evaluate your goals to ensure they are SMART and revise as needed.

  3. If no, think about where you want to be in 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20 years. Then write up some goals for what you can do in 2022 that will set you on the path to achieve where you want to go.

  4. Are you rigidly holding on to how you lived life before the pandemic or are you adjusting to the new normal? Write about where you have adapted, and where you want to adapt more to live a fulfilling life.

  5. What achievements in life are you most proud of?

  6. What strengths have you developed over the past two years?

  7. What are the lessons in life you have learned that have boosted your confidence in yourself and how can you use this to boost even more confidence in 2022?

Wrap Up

The Capricorn new moon comes on the heels of the 2022 new year beaming down a productive time to write up your new year goals. Take the two weeks of the new moon phase to do work on goal setting. We have Venus retrograde already in motion and Mercury retrograde energy starting to build.

With the retrograde energy prominent at the new moon we are able to reflect back on past life lessons, make some corrections and course adjustments, and use this information to plan for our future. This is a great time for visioning January, all of 2022, and our long-term goals in the next 3, 5, 10, and 20 years ahead.
