Aries New Moon Overview – Igniting a new cycle
March is a potent month with many planetary shifts. As we move into the Aries new moon, March holds the transition from Pisces season to Aries season, the equinox, and a dynamic transition of planetary expression. Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac and Aries is the first.
Twelve times a year we collectively experience the Sun changing signs as it travels through the twelve zodiac signs. The sign the Sun is traveling through is what we call our zodiac birth sign.
When the Sun transitions from Pisces to Aries at the March equinox, it marks the end and beginning of the astrological new year. It is a fresh start. Like new moons, it represents a new beginning, and a new solar cycle around the zodiac.
The dynamic energy of this month’s Aries new moon will ignite the house in your chart occupied by Aries. Mercury and Jupiter are also traveling through Aries making the new moon more expressive in communication and highly optimistic.
There is a sense of ‘shooting for the stars and you can’t miss’ that comes with the Aries new moon and with Mercury and Jupiter also in Aries. There may be more risk taking, assertive and aggressive language, and a calling to go big for whatever it is you are inspired to achieve. It is dry and warm enough to easily strike a spark and fire up a new project.
The quality of time at the Aries new moon is highly active. You may feel restlessness in your body and your mind. Physical activity will be beneficial for managing this increase in dynamic energy. If you need to supercharge a project with a lot of focus and energy, kick it off at the Aries new moon.
March is an exciting month. With so much change, we may feel like there is some chaos. It may seem like there is movement under our feet causing us to feel a bit off balance. Look at where this is happening in your life because it is an opportunity to make a change.
Those of you who have a lot of planetary placements in air and fire signs will likely feel super charged and excited about the changes in March, even if you are unsure how you will handle them.
If you have a lot of planetary placements in earth and water, you may be more hesitant than excited. You likely prefer to move with caution and routine. If you are feeling this way, soothe yourself with gentle physical activity and take more time doing things that ground you.
However you are experiencing the transitions of March, it is certainly a dynamic time with increased energy and desire to shake off some metaphysical cobwebs that are slowing us down and launch into something new.
Whether it is a brand new project, or taking something to the next level. All lights are green. What ignites your soul to take action? Go do that!
Aries New Moon Sign and Libra Opposite Sign
Aries is a sign that loves a challenge, it is hardwired to conquer, and contains the quality of youth like energy and the warrior. With qualities of youth, impulsivity, rash behavior, and immaturity comes courage, bravery, and a belief that you can succeed.
Aries puts on the brave face when challenged and does not back down when in fear. In fact, it is facing the fears, both external and internal, that make a person courageous. The Aries new moon is a time to be courageous, accept a challenge, and go all in to win.
When we are in Aries season, it is always recommended to take a look at the opposite sign of Libra. We can learn more about one sign by understanding its mirror opposite. Where Aries is about self-focus, Libra is about other-focus.
Libra is about relationships, engaging with others, how we find harmony and balance, and finding beauty in the world. Libra focuses on the other and sees or learns about the self through the reflection of others. The Libra time of the year is about evaluating our relationships with others.
Aries is the time of the year to highlight self-focus. To evaluate and understand how well you are taking care of yourself, your needs, and your goals. If you are operating more on the Libra side of things, you may spend a good deal of your time and energy focused on others.
While there are times where you may need to live in an imbalanced way, it is important not to allow this to be indefinite. For example, to live for a temporary time period imbalanced toward the Aries direction, you may be launching a business or project, dealing with a health crisis, or experiencing a significant life transition. These times call for more self-focused activity.
If you are going through a temporary time period where you are focused on another you may be caring for a sick family member or helping out more while your partner is launching a new business. There are endless examples where give and take goes out of balance.
What you want to tease out are these normal and time limited experiences that leave you imbalanced, from living an ongoing life of imbalance with no end in sight. If you are always focused on yourself, it will be hard to experience healthy exchanges of love and friendship.
If you are always focused on others, you will miss opportunities to pursue the things in life you want for yourself. You will likely spend a great deal of time doing things others want to do not realizing time is slipping away along with your dreams.
The Aries new moon and equinox provide an energy and vibration for you to step into your world and really think about what you want for you? Are you pursuing your dreams and goals? Do you take time in your regular schedule to focus on your self-care and well-being?

Aries New Moon Astrological Events
Aries New Moon and Saturn, Pluto, and Mars Change Signs
This idea of new beginnings and fresh starts is reinforced by the great number of planets crossing the zero degree mark this month. We regularly see the Sun, Mercury, and Venus changing signs each month. In March, we also have Mars, Saturn, and Pluto changing signs.
The essence of a planet doesn’t change when it changes signs. What changes is how it expresses that essence in your astrology chart (the zodiac signs), and where it expresses that energy (the astrological houses).
Here are important dates in March
7 March: Saturn from Aquarius to Pisces
16 March: Venus from Aries to Taurus
19 March: Mercury from Pisces to Aries
20 March: Sun conjunct 0 Aries = equinox and astrological new year
20 March: Equinox
21 March: Aries New Moon
23 March: Pluto from Capricorn to Aquarius
25 March: Mars from Gemini to Cancer
Pluto and the Aquarius Part of Your Horoscope
There is a transition of power with Pluto changing signs. A big energy shift from the Capricorn part of your chart to Aquarius. Remember that Saturn just left the Aquarius part of your chart. Pluto moves in just two weeks after Saturn leaves.
It was a big deal with Saturn changing signs. With Pluto changing signs in the same month, it is a powerful message of pivoting energetic signatures in the Aquarius part of your chart. Pluto hasn’t changed signs since 2008 when it went into Capricorn. Pluto changing signs is a big deal too.
When Saturn was traveling in the Aquarius part of your chart, it asked you to consolidate and build innovative projects, and keep them on track. A lot of hard work and effort would have been focused on this part of your chart. Now the Aquarius part of your chart is getting a new energy source.
There is a transition of power with Pluto moving in. What you were working hard on, building, and putting structure to when Saturn was traveling in this part of your chart will now be put to the test. Pluto will clear out what is not needed and harness your power as it relates to the Aquarius part of your chart.
You may experience some insights or awakenings when Pluto changes signs on March 23. Not everyone will feel the activation equally, especially if you don’t have planets or points occupying the early degrees of signs.
Some of you will feel the activation potently, especially if you have planets or points in Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, or Scorpio. It’s important to know your chart to understand better what is activated as Pluto changes signs.
Pluto is about big change and power. It can represent a time where things move out of your life to free up space for change. It can show up in relationships and the exchange of power in them. Themes of having power over others, feeling that others have power over you, or empowerment are likely to pop up where Pluto in Aquarius is activating a part of your chart.
Pressure will be relieved in the Capricorn part of your chart when Pluto leaves. The lessons there have completed and Pluto aims its focus on a different part of your chart for a very long lesson in Aquarius. Because the lessons are so long, they can be subtle, come on strong at different periods of time, and in the end, leave some part of your life irrevocably changed.
Pluto will visit Aquarius until January of 2044. You see, a very long lesson. It will dip back into Capricorn a few times through retrograde this year and next year, 2024, before its travels are totally focused on Aquarius.
Those of you with planets in the very last degrees of Capricorn, Cancer, Libra, and Aries will experience some activation when Pluto moves back into Capricorn in 2023 and 2024. If you are a Cancer, Capricorn, Libra, or Aries Sun, Moon, or Ascendant, you are at the very end of experiencing Pluto activations.
You have been through the purification process of Pluto and can look back to 2008 and think about what significant changes happened in the Aquarius part of my chart? The Equinox and Astrological New Year
The Sun moves into Aries on Monday 20 March and marks the time of the equinox. The equinoxes and solstices are nature’s ways of reminding us about how life can ebb and flow, pushing us in and out of balance.
They are reminders to be conscious of when we are living in a balanced way, when we are out of balance, and being intentional about how we manage balance in our lives.
I talk about this in greater detail in this month’s Aries new moon video. Check it out here:
Aries New Moon and Venus Sextile Saturn
For a change of pace. In other parts of your horoscope, Venus in Taurus has a warm welcome for Saturn in Pisces. They will have a relationship called a sextile on 17 March which will still be active at the time of the Aries new moon.
This energetic union in the sky can provide some grounding to all this fiery energy of the Aries new moon. It’s a nice welcome to Saturn as it is in the beginning of its journey through Pisces as Venus, the planet of harmony and relationship, sends a warm welcome.
By making a smooth and easy connection with Saturn, it is like they are harmoniously working together on the transition of Saturnian energy to a new part of your chart. And this is happening at the same time as this dynamic Aries new moon that is igniting something new in your chart.
Venus is also conjunct (same sign) the North Node. There can be a fated quality in things that you start under the Aries new moon. It is a quality that seems like it was meant to happen now, and holds the hope of harmony and structure that stands the test of time.
Essential Oils for your Diffuser
Ginger – For self-empowerment, to overcome fear, and spark your creative fire.
Citrus essential oils lemon, sweet orange, lime or bergamot or rosemary and thyme – to stimulate, energize, and refresh your senses. This will help support you as you start new things.
Peppermint for energy and focus, which may be needed to harness all the dynamic Aries energy.
Frankincense, geranium, lavender or rose to sooth and balance the dynamic Aries energy and calm any stress you may experience.
Patchouli or vetiver for grounding if all that dynamic Aries energy throughs you off.
Aries New Moon Intentions
Do your new moon intentions after the new moon phase begins.
Allow yourself time to focus on yourself. Be a little self-centered and consider how well you take care of your own needs vs taking care of others.
What are you most excited to do with your time over the next few months? Set intentions around starting important things in your life right now or taking a current project to the next phase.
Burn away obstacles metaphorically in a fire new moon ritual. Write down on paper anything blocking you from doing what you love to do, and burn it. Let all these obstacles burn away in the fire, let them go, so you can focus on the important things in life.
Set intentions about starting a new adventure and see in your mind’s eye what that project looks like when it is successful. Make that spark and ignite your flame for rising to the challenge of your next project that you are passionate about.
Aries New Moon Activities
Aries new moon activity: Draw a line with self-focused on one end and other focused on the other end. For important relationships in your life, draw a vertical line for how you engage with that relationship. Are you more extremely self-focused, extremely other-focused, or balanced somewhere in the middle.
Here is an example:
Kick off any new projects that you have been wanting to get moving on.
Do spring cleaning, or fall cleaning in the southern hemisphere. It’s time to clear out the old and make room for the new.
This is the very beginning of some important cycles, journal about what parts in your life are getting ready to shift and pivot. Are you moving, starting a new project, passing a big milestone with your business, having a baby. What is on the horizon for you? This is a great time to look forward and find something that challenges you and excites you. Something that drives you to take action.
The important thing is to take action on something
If you have been wanting to start a martial arts program, do it under the Aries new moon.
Aries as a sign of Mars is related to knives and cutting. Be careful around sharp objects. If you work with them, like a chef or doctor, this could be an interesting time to evaluate your tools and update or upgrade them.
If you are an artist who works with metal, this is a great time to create.
Aries is a dynamic fire sign. There can be an accumulation of energy that needs to be expressed. Get out and move your body. Walking, biking, or tennis could be great outlets for excess energy.
Make a firepit or bonfire, have a BBQ, light candles, immerse in the fire element. Be safe!
Accept a challenge, do an online challenge, or challenge a friend in a friendly and supportive self-improvement program.
Take a risk and jump in on something you have always wanted to do but haven’t because of fear. For example, record a video, go on stage, sign up for a half marathon, or write a book. Challenge yourself to go for your dreams no matter how scary it seems.
Plant metaphorical seeds of life to create something new that you are passionate about.
